"Joe was a real teacher." —Anne Savage
Joe Savage

Dear Community,

On the last night of his life, Joe Savage was singing and dancing to the folk sound of John and Gabby's mandolin bluegrass music. A truly singular Anthroposophist, Joe, who pioneered and anchored the life of spiritual science in Florida, passed away on Monday, January 12, 2026 at 11:25 am in Sarasota from a sudden aorta complication.

Fascinated by alternative energy and committed to inventing new systems in his backyard shed (a motor that runs on water!), he brought us his unique enthusiasm for his unceasing discoveries of how spirit works in matter. He lived his life by way of his own striving for self-verified truth and freedom, and Rudolf Steiner was the man whom he trusted as his guide.

"How do you know what you know?" For me, this phrase is like a baseline rhythm that poured out of every encounter I had with Joe. The meaning of life is not in the answers, but in the questions. He taught us clarity, and toward the end, he felt we all needed to get back to the basics, to quiet ourselves, concentrate, observe and connect with our sentient life in a way that leads us to the spiritual truths that define our existence.

Joe helped us work on the health of our soul. His last lesson that he prepared for his study group was on Chapter 4 of Theosophy. Our study now lays before us: when we find that inner calm and emotional balance in our spiritual investigation, then the waves of joy and suffering will begin to form eyes and ears into the spiritual world. As we grow thus into the higher development of our personality, we come together into the all-embracing spirit of life—but in a way that we are not lost in the One. We remain free and bring our own distinct shades of color without losing the fullness of our individual strength.

This was a man who baked bread and pies starting with grinding his own pristine grain and picking his fruit... and he loved Florida.

"May my heart-love reach to soul-love.
May my love's warmth shine to spirit light.
Thus, I draw near to you."

Thank you brother Joe.
